Baseline grid
The baseline grid is a graphic foundation that shapes the design of magazines, books, advertisements, brochures and other printed matter. In-depth knowledge of typography and the system of lines are prerequisites for constructing a baseline grid consisting of horizontal lines.
The construction of the baseline grid is a work step of the graphic artist when creating a design grid . When setting up the baseline grid graphic designer pays attention to correct letter and word spacing and the line spacing with the corresponding bullet . The horizontal spacing of the baseline grid is defined by the selected font of the running text . If other fonts and font sizes are selected for marginal columns, picture titles or headings, these are often based on the baseline grid, so that they run on the baseline grid in the first line, for example.
In addition to the baseline grid, other elements such as the choice of the right column system are important when the graphic designer is designing a new print product. Some modern book designers today are increasingly questioning the need for a fixed page grid, viewing it as an over-formalized restriction on design freedom and an obstacle to a direct relationship between author and reader.
