The Grundtvigianism is a direction within the Danish National Church . It has its starting point with the Danish pastor, hymn poet and author NFS Grundtvig (1783–1872) and his conception of Christianity, culture, church and fatherland. In addition to the conversion and sanctification -oriented Indre Mission ( Inner Mission ), the more liberal and optimistic basic Victorianism was one of the two most important Danish revival movements in the 19th century. It is also referred to as “the farmer's cheerful Christianity” (gårdmændenes glade kristendom) .

For Grundtvig and Grundtvigianism, Christian popular education is the central concern. Religion is understood less dogmatic than popular . The aim is to integrate national heritage and romantic sentiment into church and private religious life. The movement thus stood in opposition to rationalism , but also to denominational neo-Lutheranism . Among the Scandinavian immigrants in North America, this contrast even led to a split in the Lutheran congregations.
