Bottom time (diving)

Under basic time is meant at a dive with scuba set the period from leaving the water surface ( descent , compression phase) until leaving the maximum depth (Isokompressionsphase up to the beginning of the rise).

The bottom time value is required in order to use dive tables to calculate which decompression stops are mandatory during the ascent (decompression). If no mandatory decompression stops are necessary, i.e. a diver can ascend directly to the surface of the water if the maximum ascent speed is adhered to, one speaks of no-stop dives . When calculating dives with a decompression table, a rectangular profile is always assumed. This rectangular profile is then not identical to the actually immersed profile. Since it is assumed that the entire bottom time was spent at the maximum depth, the decompression times are longer than when using dive computers , which calculate the saturation values ​​on the basis of the real dive data.

Regardless of whether the no-stop time has been exceeded or not, a safety stop of at least three minutes at a depth of five meters is recommended.
