The Grutas da Moeda (Grottoes of the Coins) are show caves in the São Mamede area in the Leiria district , west of Fátima near the A1 motorway in Portugal .
The Grutas da Moeda were discovered by hunters in 1971. First they found the Schäferhalle, a large cave with stalactite formations . Starting from the narrow openings of this cave, the men dug for almost two months and came across other halls that belong to the system of the Grutas da Moeda.
The grottoes were developed into tourist attractions and named after the stalactite formations: crib, shepherd, waterfall, virgin, red dome, seascape, unfinished chapel, wedding cake and fountain of tears.
The viewing area of the caves is about 350 m and goes up to 45 m deep. The temperature in the caves is constantly around 18 ° C. Entrance and exit are at different points in a stony landscape.
