Guangji Bridge
The Guangji Bridge ( Chinese 廣 濟 橋 / 广 济 桥 , Pinyin Guǎngjì Qiáo , English Guangji Bridge ), which is also known under the name Xiangzi Bridge ( Chinese 湘 子 橋 / 湘 子 桥 , Pinyin Xiāngzǐ Qiáo , English Xiangzi Bridge ), is located in the east of Chaozhou City , in the east of southern China 's Guangdong Province .
The Guangji Bridge is one of the famous four ancient bridges in China (中国 四大 古桥; Pinyin: Zhōngguó sìdà gǔqiáo). It has been bridging the Han Jiang River with a length of 518 meters for over 800 years . It was the first opening bridge in the world in which part of the river crossing (the section allowing shipping traffic) was designed as a pontoon bridge . Its construction was completed in 1170 in the Southern Song Dynasty after a construction period of over 50 years.
The bridge has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China (3-69) since 1988 , recent renovation work was completed in 2007.
According to an old saying, if you haven't seen the bridge, you haven't been to Chaozhou.
- “到 潮 不到 桥 , 枉 向 潮州 走一遭.” (Pinyin: Dào Cháo bù dào qiáo, wǎng xiàng Cháozhōu zǒu yī zāo. )
