Balsa, a spear bearer from Kanbal, returns after two years to the Yogo empire to have her spear repaired there. On the way to town, she saves Prince Chagum's life when his carriage falls from a bridge into the river. Chagum's mother, the Second Empress, has Balsa brought to the Second Palace, where she asks the warrior to flee with her son and protect him. The emperor himself seeks Chagum's life in order to preserve the godlike reputation of the imperial family, which is threatened by the prince who appears to be possessed by a demon. Balsa reluctantly agrees and flees the palace with Chagum.

Balsa had a fire set in Chagum's rooms to cover up the escape. Officially, the prince perished in this fire. The emperor's advisors are convinced that Chagum is possessed by a water demon, as mentioned in the official founding story of the empire. Only the emperor himself, as a descendant of the founder of the empire, Torgar, could conquer the demon and thus save Yogo from ruin by killing his son himself. The holy sage sends out a troop of hunters to find the prince and bring him back.

Balsa and Chagum are attacked by the four hunters outside the city and briefly separated from each other. The warrior manages to repel the attackers, but is wounded by their leader. Balsa therefore sends Chagum alone to the hut of the healer Tanda and remains seriously injured himself.

Tanda, who has known Balsa since they were both children, brings the badly injured warrior to his hut and treats her wounds there. In the imperial palace, Chagum's teacher Shuga is entrusted by the holy sage with the task of looking in a secret archive of the magicians for a way to free the prince from the demon without having to kill him.

Tanda's master, the shaman Torogai from the yaku people, realizes that Chagum carries the egg of a water spirit, from which a water demon could develop, which could possibly bring a great drought over the land. The imperial court holds a mourning ceremony for the officially deceased Chagum and initiates a large-scale search for balsa, which is believed to be responsible for the prince's death.

By means of a diversionary maneuver, Balsa succeeds in separating the imperial hunters, who still follow them, into several groups. Nevertheless, the two are tracked down by two hunters on the way to Kanbal in the Aogiri Mountains. On the run from the pursuers, a large wolf pulls Balsa and Chagum into an abyss, whereupon the hunters believe they are dead. The attack of the wolf, however, was a deception staged by Torogai.

Balsa and Chagum secretly return to the Yogo empire and settle in an old water mill in the country to hide there until the coming spring.

Balsa and Chagum seek out a master swordsmith to have a new blade made for Balsa's spear. However, he initially refuses because Balsa has opposed the imperial court. When two of the hunters come to the blacksmith to pick up swords, Balsa and Chagum hide in an adjoining room. By telling them the story of a warrior, the blacksmith learns from the hunters that Balsa did not kill any of their pursuers and thus remained true to an oath she once made. So when the hunters left, the blacksmith agreed to forge a new blade for Balsa's spear.

Balsa asks the orphan boy Tōya to better familiarize Chagum with the way of life of the city dwellers and to teach him how to trade and bargain. The two meet three men who are involved in a game of chance. When Chagum sees through the fraud, he decides to teach the men a lesson and to get the duped back their lost money.

The soul of Tōya's friend Saya has left her body as the girl is unhappy about a wedding that has been arranged for her and the son of a rice trader. Tanda brings Saya's soul back with a "soul call". However, he now has difficulty in returning to his own body. Only with the help of Chagum and Balsa does he finally manage to return.

Chagum challenges a boy from Lota who has insulted the emperor to a rucha competition at the solstice festival. Although Chagum wins, the boy does not want to apologize. Balsa therefore challenges his father when he takes sides with his son in the dispute. She defeats the man, whereupon the boy apologizes to Chagum.

An old rival, whom Balsa once inflicted a humiliating defeat, recognized the warrior at the solstice festival and now wants to take revenge on her. Since he draws completely uninvolved travelers into the conflict, Balsa confronts the man and can finally defeat him. Afterwards, she believes that she has been unfaithful to her vow never to take another life, as she initially mistakenly believes the conquered is dead.

Shuga and the shaman Torogai discover independently of one another that the official creation story of the Yogo Empire, according to which the founder of the empire Torgar and eight warriors once defeated a drought-causing water demon in the Aogiri Mountains, does not correspond to the facts and only as a legitimation for the emperor's claim to power serves. Instead, the egg of the water spirit, of which Chagum is the guardian, could save the land from the impending drought.

Torogai tells Balsa and Tanda that Chagum's life is threatened by the “egg eater” La Lunga, who comes from the parallel world of Nayug at the spring equinox . They want to travel to a secluded Yaku village to learn more about La Lunga from their legends. In the palace, Shuga discovers signs that Chagum is still alive. However, he keeps this to himself for the time being, as he has no evidence yet. Meanwhile, Crown Prince Sagum, who after the supposed death of his younger brother is suffering from the heavy burden of succession to the throne, dies of exhaustion and grief.

Shuga and the hunters discover that Chagum and Balsa's fall into the abyss was a ruse. The magician tells the emperor and the holy sage that the egg of the water spirit in Chagum could prevent the impending drought. With the support of the hunters, he goes in search of the prince. By secretly following Tōya, who delivers balsa supplies, the hunters find the old water mill.

Shuga meets Chagum in the city, but cannot take the boy back to the palace because Balsa prevents him from doing so. Chagum learns of the death of his brother Sagum. At the same time, thanks to Tōya's involuntary help, the hunters discover the watermill and lie in wait there. To warn Balsa and Chagum, Tōya, who discovered the pursuers, sets the mill on fire.

Chagum runs away and wants to return to the imperial court, as he hopes to be safe there from the egg eater La Lunga. Balsa follows him and persuades him to stay by promising to protect him by all means. Meanwhile, Shuga and the hunters also reach the village, where they demand the prince's release.

Torogai reports to Shuga about La Lunga and convinces him and the hunters to keep Chagum in Balsa's care. Shuga returns to the palace to further decipher the magicians' secret records. Balsa, Chagum, Torogai and Tanda go to the hunter's cave to spend the winter there. In order to bring the boy, who is still struggling with his fate, out of his gloomy mood, Balsa tells him about her past.

When Balsa's father is involved in a political intrigue at the royal court of Kanbal, he asks his friend, Jiguro, to flee from Kanbal with the young Balsa. On the way to Yogo, Jiguro is forced to kill several of his friends, who in turn have been blackmailed to pursue Jiguro and Balsa. After the two of them receive news of the murder of Balsa's father, Jiguro teaches Balsa his martial arts so that she can defend herself if something should happen to him.

Several years later, Jiguro also has to kill the last of his former comrades when they track him down and Balsa. When the political situation in Kanbal changes for the better some time later and Jiguro dies of an illness, Balsa vows to repent for the eight men he killed and to save just as many lives. With this story, Chagum can accept his fate more easily and he asks Balsa to teach him how to fight.

At the beginning of spring, Chagum's actions are more and more influenced by the egg of the water spirit. At a lake he and his companions meet again with Shuga and the hunters. With the help of his protectors, the prince escapes the first attack of the egg eater La Lunga.

Under the guidance of the egg, Chagum sets out alone to the place where the birth of the water spirit is to take place. Balsa, Tanda and the hunters follow him, but on the way they suddenly find themselves facing two La Lungas. Only when Tanda finds a way to penetrate the parallel world of Nayug does the group manage to kill one of the beings.

Balsa and her companions find Chagum and protect him in the parallel world of Nayug from a seemingly endless number of La Lungas who suddenly disappear without a trace at sunrise. Tanda manages to get the egg out of Chagum's body so that the water spirit can be born.

Back in the imperial palace, Chagum is made crown prince and celebrated as the reincarnation of the founder of the empire Torgar and thus as the savior of the Yogo empire. Balsa, Torogai and Tanda are rewarded by the emperor for protecting the prince and then leave to return home. Chagum wants to run away with his friends, but is encouraged by Balsa to take on his new assignment instead. The spear bearer herself is returning to Kanbal because she still has a job to do there.
