Gunda (unit)

Gunda , also Gonda, was a piece of measure in Calcutta and on various islands in East India.

  • 1 Gunda = 5 Particulars = 5 pieces
  • 4 Gunda = 20 Particulars = 1 Corge / Koorje / Courge / Cortsch = 20 pieces (handkerchiefs, woven pieces)

Similar measure was in Bombay Conge or Stiege, which also meant 20 pieces in the amount. Kohrdsch or Corge was another name or spelling for the smaller piece size. In Java had with tobacco the measure 40 baskets.

Gunda was also used as a piece of measure as a bill of exchange in the Maldives and the Laccadivian Islands . Here the shell Kauri (Cypraca) was a unit of account if it was not broken.
