The belt slack in the three-point automatic belt system is caused by the belt stretching, the film reel effect of the roll-up mechanism and by loose clothing. Due to the slack in the belt, which can be 13 to 15 cm, the position of the passenger is shifted forwards in the event of an accident (“out-of-position risk”) and thus leads to greater delays and injuries. The introduction of a belt tensioner reduces belt slack.
