He was elected on January 5, 1816 as the first president of this newly established commercial court. On May 23, 1821, he was finally elected councilor and as such was a member of the Hamburg Higher Court, which until the constitution of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg in 1860 consisted of a juridical mayor as president and 10 councilors. Rentzel, as councilor, was also the administrator of the praetur . Despite his diverse official activities , he also worked as an asset manager and guardian . Rentzel died on June 16, 1832 at the age of 59 in Hamburg.

In the Ohlsdorf cemetery , Senators (II) of the Althamburg Memorial Cemetery commemorates Eduard Rentzel, among others.

family

Rentzel was the son of the licentiate Garlieb Rentzel (1727–1796) and his wife Anna Margaretha Sillem (1732–1788), daughter of councilor Joachim Sillem (1691–1737). The preacher at Hamburg's Sankt Jacobi Church , Hermann Rentzel (1764–1827), was his brother. In 1805 Rentzel had married Maria Therese Rücker (1785–1821), daughter of Oberold Siegmund Diedrich Rücker (1744–1834). From this marriage a son and three daughters were born. However, the son died at the age of five and so Eduard Rentzel was the last bearer of the name of this old and respected Hamburg family.
