Gustavus Waltz (effective from 1732 to 1759) was a British singer of German origin with a bass voice who worked with Georg Friedrich Handel in London . He appeared both as a singer in Handel's opera choir and as a soloist. Exact dates of life of Gustavus Waltz are not known.

life and work

Waltz announced on March 13, 1732 his debut as Osmyn in the opera Amelia by John Frederick Lamp at the Haymarket Theater in London. In the following years he appeared in several world premieres of Handel operas as Minos in Arianna in Creta , as King of Scotland in Ariodante (1735), as Melisso in Alcina (1736) and as Nicandro in Atalanta . Waltz sang in the choir for the last time in 1759 in a performance of the Messiah at the Foundling Hospital in London .

After Handel made the acquaintance of Gluck in London in 1745 , Handel is said to have made the following statement to his friend and confidante Mrs. Cibber: “Gluck knew no more of contrapunto than my cook Waltz” (“Gluck doesn't understand any more about counterpoint than my cook Waltz "). This statement has been misinterpreted because Waltz was an excellent singer and counterpointist. The statement based on this that Waltz was originally Handel's cook is not proven.
