Gutleuthof chapel from the east

The Gutleuthof Chapel or St. Laurentius Chapel is a Gothic chapel from the 15th century in the Heidelberg district of Schlierbach near the southern bank of the Neckar . It is a listed building.

history

The chapel was built by Count Palatine Ludwig III. Donated in 1430 for the infirmary for lepers (Gutleuthaus). In 1741 the manor house, which last served as a misery for strangers in the city, was converted into an inn. The chapel served the Schlierbach population as a church room and cemetery chapel. In 1861 the Gutleuthof chapel was separated from the old Schlierbach cemetery by the construction of the Neckar Valley Railway and thus lost the function of a cemetery chapel. A fire in 1880 completely destroyed the manor house, only traces of the buildings can still be seen on the west facade of the chapel. After the Schlierbach parish churches were built at the beginning of the 20th century, the Gutleuthof chapel had lost its function as a church for both denominations. Medieval frescoes were discovered in 1921 and exposed in 1941.

The easily recognizable fresco to the left of the window shows St. Barbara , St. Margaret of Hungary and the Annunciation . In the lower part of the walls there are a total of ten consecration crosses .
