ICD-10 online (WHO version 2019)

Gymnophobia (from Greek : γυμνός [gymnós] = naked and φόβος, φοβία [phóbos, phobía] = fear) denotes the pathological and irrational fear of one's own or someone else's nudity . This is a specific phobia that cannot be equated with excessive shame , even if it is often misinterpreted as such.

This fear of seeing naked people or of being seen naked also occurs under those framework conditions in which this is socially permitted, so that, for example, sauna visits are not possible.

As with many other specific anxiety disorders , there is no information on the prevalence of gymnophobia .
