Háttér Society and Archives Budapest

The Háttér Society and Archives (Hungarian: Háttér Társaság a Melegekért) is an institution in Budapest Hungary that supports and documents homosexual life. Háttér Társaság is located in Budapest at Balzac Street 8-10.

The founding of the Háttér Society (with the name Háttér Társaság a Melegekért) took place in 1995 in the Vaskapu guest house above Esztergom . Shortly thereafter, the association moved to its first office on Visegrádi Street in Budapest. In 1996 the Háttér archive was founded.

From 1996 she organized the IGLYO as an annual conference in Budapest. In 1996 the association became a member of ILGA . In 1997 she was the organizer of the first Gay Pride demonstration in Budapest.

In 2003, the association's successful lobbying activities resulted in Hungary becoming the first European country to expressly forbid discrimination on the basis of gender identity in its anti-discrimination law. In 2004 the company organized the annual conference of ILGA Europe in Budapest.

The US Embassy awarded the Háttér Society the Active Citizenship Award , an award for organizations that recognize active and selfless action for society.

In 2012 the employees of the Háttér Archives took part in the international special conference for LGBTI archives, libraries and museums.

Since 2013 the name of the association has been Háttér Gesellschaft.
