Ports in Singapore
Singapore has traditionally owned several port facilities due to its extensive stretches of coastline and a few side islands. The entire section of the heavily developed port facilities today extends over around 30 kilometers on the south-west coast of the main island and some of the sub-islands to the south. A logistically sensible division of labor has emerged: general cargo, bulk cargo and fish, oil and petrochemical products, container and passenger traffic each have their own ports.
There are the following ports in Singapore :
- Cargo ports
- Port of Singapore, the largest cargo port
- Jurong Port
- Keppel Harbor (between Pulau Brani and Sentosa)
- Serangoon Harbor
- Former river port, Boat Quay
- Passenger port
- Singapore Cruise Center
These seaports are located on the heavily frequented shipping lanes between Southeast Asia and Europe. The facilities are managed by two operators: PSA International and Jurong Port Pte Ltd (Jurong Port). The port facilities in the south of the country had an enormous share in the economic growth of the city-state at the latest after independence. Today the port is an important economic factor in the country. In 2016, 30.59 million TEU were handled in the PSA container ports alone .
All cargo ports together form the largest port in the world in terms of tonnage , cargo handling and transhipment. Half of the annual volume of crude oil and its products transported in the world is handled here. There are 1000 berths and a lot of anchorages. There are around 300 cranes in the ports .
