The hanging theodolite is a measuring instrument for measuring angles. It is a special type of theodolite and is mainly used in mining in narrow pit spaces. The hanging theodolite is basically constructed like a standing theodolite, but hangs the other way round on a steel peg that is screwed to the pit support with clamps or attached magnetically. This guarantees a forced centering. The target signs are attached to the same steel pegs . These are designed as double cones hanging in a chain, the length of which corresponds to the perpendicular distance from the awl to the tilt axis of the hanging theodolite. The instrument height can thus be ignored.
