Design and history

The music box was created by Gottfried Höfer in 1977 and built in the Meißner tower clock workshop. The preparation of the five-meter-high metal music box was made in 1979. She introduced the conclusion of this time redesigned again today as Brandenburgerstraße named Klement Gottwald Street ,

The electrically operated clock rests on four pillars and is made of steel, copper, brass and gold leaf . There is a carillon under a rose arbor , with the individual bells made of fine porcelain . The clock is crowned by views of the city of Potsdam and buildings such as the Nauener Tor and the Einstein Tower , the representations of which are etched into metal. Inside the four pillars there is a shiny gold ball that shows the time. Under the sphere there are metal plates with symbols that refer to branches of science and trades such as astronomy and Havel fisheries.

Hourly quarter, the song with bright-sounding Glock In the spring of Hanns Eisler intoned. A full verse is played every full hour.

The clock was a popular meeting place especially for political groups. In 1983 young people met here in silence for the environment . From the mid-1980s, people wishing to leave the country met at the music box, also in silence. On October 7, 1989, the demonstration of civil rights activists began in silence at Höfer's music box.

In the course of time, however, the delicate porcelain bells in the clock had broken, so that the song only sounded piecemeal. At the beginning of the 1990s the clock was shut down. The exterior also suffered from corrosion . Höfers' former partner, Ute Samtleben , campaigned for a restoration of the clock, which was then restored over four years in the Meißner tower clock workshop, which the city of Potsdam financed with 25,000 €. On May 2, 2010, the music box was put back into operation.
