The Higher Technical Federal Teaching and Research Institute Rankweil (abbreviated HTL Rankweil ) is an Austrian vocational higher school with technical training focuses and an associated research institute. The school is based in Rankweil in Vorarlberg .

history

History of the HTL in Vorarlberg

Since the end of the 19th century, industrialization in the Vorarlberg region meant offering young people in trade and industry basic and advanced schooling. In 1908 a k. u. k. Technical school for commercial drawing in Bregenz. In 1909 the school was expanded to include a building craft course, which was intended to enable prospective managers in the masonry and carpentry trade to acquire the necessary theoretical knowledge. In 1914 the school in k. u. k. Building trade school renamed because the building trade course became a training focus. In 1916 the school was interrupted due to the First World War, but lessons were resumed in February 1918 with a training course for the disabled. In 1920 the building trade school was reopened and expanded to include a civil engineering course, which, however, was not held for long. A technical college for mechanical engineering and electrical engineering was also founded in the fall and enjoyed great demand. In 1922 the school was renamed the “Federal College for Building and Electrical Engineering”, and in 1935 the “Federal Trade School”. In 1941 there was an 8-semester engineering school due to demand from the armaments factories.

HTL in the post-war period

After the Second World War it was renamed “Higher Technical Federal School”. From 1946 the technical schools in Austria underwent a fundamental reorientation, which, among other things, provided for a separation of the technical schools for mechanical engineering and electrical engineering. Therefore a technical college for mechanical engineering and a higher department for mechanical engineering were founded from this school year. It was also stipulated that general education should be taught in technical schools as an equivalent training alongside the imparting of technical know-how, which meant that the graduates could also acquire the university entrance qualification. This in turn led to a strong demand for vocational technical schools in the "Ländle". In 1962 the higher department for electrical engineering was founded.

In 1969, due to the strong demand for a higher construction school in the state under Mayor Ammann, the municipality of Rankweil made a building plot available free of charge on May 30, 1969 in order to enable the Republic of Austria to set up a second higher technical college in Vorarlberg, this time with a focus on civil engineering . This created the prerequisites for the establishment of a second HTL in the country. In the decree of the Federal Ministry for Education Zl. 107.753-III / 4/69 it says: “At the beginning of the school year 1969/70 a higher technical federal teaching and research institute for civil engineering will be established in Rankweil. Until the organizational full expansion, the institute will be run as a branch of the higher technical federal teaching and research institute Bregenz . "

A wish of the construction industry came true. Those interested in building training no longer had to go to Innsbruck, but could complete an apprenticeship at an HTL in the state. In the school year 1969/70 the "Expositur Rankweil of the Higher Technical Federal Teaching and Research Institute Bregenz" was run as a higher department for building construction and also 3 classes of building craft school moved initially from Bregenz to Feldkirch, in the premises of the old teachers' college. The school's building yard and the carpentry were also temporarily located in alternative quarters in Feldkirch and Rankweil. The research institute for building materials founded in Bregenz in 1965 found a temporary solution in the old syringe house in Rankweil, under the direction of Zierl.

For the new building, the federal government approved a space program for a school with 25 classes, which also provided for the establishment of a training facility for communications technology and electronics. The lessons in the field of construction technology and the building trade school were taken up until the school building was completely completed under adventurous conditions. By decree of the Federal Ministry for Education and Art of February 11, 1975, the branch office became an independent school with the name HTBLuVA Rankweil. With the beginning of the 1976/77 school year, the opening of the first year of the higher department for communications engineering and electronics was also possible. In the largely completed workshop wing, the new building was already available for the practical basic training of the state-of-the-art workshops. At the beginning of the 1977/78 school year, full operation began in the new building.

From the 1976/77 school year to the 1979/80 school year, the number of classes rose from 13 to 22, and the number of regular teachers from 17 to 37, partly due to the expansion of the range of training courses. For example, in 1978/79 a technical school for electrical communications engineering and electronics was opened. On July 12, 1978, the Rankweil research institute was granted authorization by the Federal Ministry for Buildings and Technology and thus recognized by the state. In the same year a laboratory for the investigation and testing of road building materials in the bituminous sector was also built. The school was officially handed over on May 13, 1980 in the presence of the Federal Minister for Education and Art, Fred Sinowatz .

In 1983 the HTBLuVA Rankweil had grown into the largest technical school in the state and the approved 25 classrooms were expanded by 3 classrooms. From 1988 the school offered a “higher education institution for professionals for electronics” and from 1989 opened the college for electronics. From 1993 the college was expanded to include an advanced course for electronics. In 2006 the college and the advanced course for interior design and wood technology were opened. In 2014, the school-autonomous training focus on integrated construction and energy technology (heating - ventilation) was opened. Since the 2015/16 school year, the HTL Rankweil has 37 regular classes with nearly 900 students and 114 teachers. In 2017, the additional training focus on wood construction opened in the higher-level structural engineering department.

In 1971 the planning of the new HTL in Vorarlberg was handed over to the C4 architects' association in Bregenz, and in the same year the preliminary design was approved by the Federal Ministry of Education and Art. In 1973, the earthworks began on the 28,000 m² building site provided by the Rankweil community. The master builder began in January 1974, and the roof was topped up at the end of 1975. In 1976, the communications engineering and electronics workshops were moved into. In 1977 the school building was allowed to move into on the last day of school in July, the school was officially handed over in 1980. In 2007/08 the electrics and fire protection were renewed, in 2008/09 the canteen area and the auditorium were converted and a lift was installed.

In 2010/11 the building was increased by a further 8 classes, and between 2011 and 2014 the thermal renovation of the outer facade was carried out with the renewal of the outer skin and the windows. In 2015/16 the renovation and extension was completed and the IT and CAD rooms were renovated and there are now 120 IT or CAD workstations available for schoolchildren.
