The Høvængesten (also Dødemose - or Sagnsten ; German called  "Sagenstein" ) is the largest boulder on the Danish island of Lolland . It is located on a bend in the Høvængevej road south of Øster Ulslev . The regional cycle route 38 (Paradisruten) leads past the stone.

The approximately 8.0 m long and 7.0 m wide stone, a piece of which has broken away at the top due to weathering, lies with most of its mass in the ground and cannot therefore be precisely determined in terms of size. It could be Denmark's second largest erratic boulder after the dam .

Legends

There are legends about the Høvængestenen. One says that he was thrown about 4.3 miles west by trolls from Nysted . A second legend tells that some beings called "højfolket" (English hill people) brought the stone from the bottom of Lake Maribo . They buried their gold and silver under it before leaving Lolland. It is also said, according to a common legend, that the stone rotates when it smells of fresh bread.
