Girdle

Girdle.

The girdle or girdle is a short form of the bodice that is open at the bottom. It does not belong to underwear , but is worn over it. A garter belt is not a suspender belt , although the term is often used incorrectly in this sense.

shape

The girdle is made of more or less elastic and body-shaping material and extends from the waist to the base of the thighs. It was first laced at the front. Before the brassiere became popular, women wore a so-called "breast girdle" with their girdle. The girdle is usually skin-colored or white, other colors are rarely found. The stockings were attached to the girdle with four to six clips, as elastane had not yet been invented, so they did not hold by themselves. The girdle was basically a bodice with the option of attaching stockings to it. While the bra supported above, the girdle should form the belly and hip region below. He also had the additional task of holding the now worn stockings in place.

history

The girdle is a product of fashion , it replaced the corset and bodice around 1900 with the advent of reform clothing , a more natural appearance for women was sought. The women wore underpants or knickers under or over them .

The girdle became established as a means of shaping the female body in the 1920s and experienced its heyday in the 1950s ; it was worn well into the 1960s . After that, with the advent of pantyhose, it lost its importance and became largely redundant. The body shaping function was now taken over by the panties . Very few girdles are made and sold these days.
