Hip value

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The hip value is a number that is used in orthopedics as a guide for the deformation of a hip joint . It is calculated from known measured values on the X-ray image of the hip joint. The hip value records the shape of the socket of the hip joint, the utilization of the socket by the femoral head and its position in the hip joint. Normal values up to 15 apply to adults. Slightly deformed hip joints have values from 16 to 21 and severely deformed hip joints have values from 22.

The hip value was introduced in orthopedics in 1972 and has since become a recognized aid in the assessment of hip joints. It allows the diagnosis, first, whether a due to the shape of the hip joint arthritic development is possible and on the other the already arthritic joint, whether the shape of the joint may be responsible for osteoarthritis. Follow-up checks allow a prognosis about the further development of the hip joint.
