The Hünenburg at Oeventrop is an Outbound medieval Wallburg . Today the area is a ground monument .
There are no sources that could provide information about the period of origin. Nothing is known about the builders and owners. It is clear that it is a medieval and not a prehistoric complex. It probably dates from the Carolingian or Ottonian period (9th to 10th centuries). At the time of its existence, the castle strategically dominated the Ruhr valley .
About one kilometer southwest of the Oeventrop train station, the facility is located on a steep mountain nose protruding into the Ruhr valley. The ground plan of the castle is 32 m wide and 75 m long in the south. The shape resembles a two-part triangle. The center of the castle at the extreme northern tip was separated from the southern outer bailey by a transverse wall. A neck ditch protects the mountain spur against the rising terrain in the southeast. The east side was so steep that no special fortifications were necessary there.
