Hāngi ( pronunciation : [ ˈhaːŋi ]) is a word from the Māori language of New Zealand . It describes a traditional way of cooking .

A hole is dug in the ground, in which hot stones are placed, on top of which food wrapped in large leaves (mainly large pieces of meat) is placed, which in turn is covered with leaves and then filled with earth. After a few hours, the food is cooked and can be eaten.

Nowadays, Hāngi is a tourist attraction.
