HC Andersen's Hus

The likely birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen

HC Andersens Hus is the Danish name for the house where the Danish and writer poet Hans Christian Andersen was probably born. The house is located in the old town of Odense on "Bangs Boder" street.

Although Andersen's place of birth cannot be determined with certainty, it is likely that he was born in the house. Andersen's grandmother lived in this house and in 1805, when the later poet was born, Andersen's aunt lived there. She was the only relative of Andersen's parents who lived in the region. In any case, Andersen did not live long in the house. He spent his childhood in a house in Munke Møllestræde. The “ HC Andersens Barndomshjem ” museum was built there in 1930 .

In 1905, 100 years after Andersen's birth, the city of Odense decided to build a museum in the likely birthplace of the poet. The city restored the house and opened the museum in 1908 on the poet's birthday.

In 2005 a new building was added to the museum, in which the life and work of the poet is presented on the basis of numerous documents. The old part of the museum, the actual birthplace, is furnished as it probably looked in 1805.
