H. Rancke

The H. Rancke shipyard from Hamburg-Neuenfelde existed from 1922 to 1975.

history

The origins of the shipyard go back to the blacksmith's forge, Johann Rancke, which existed on the Neuenfelder Fährdeich at the turn of the century. In addition to for the surrounding agriculture, they also made their forging for the neighboring JJ Sietas shipyard .

After the First World War , Heinrich Rancke, the founder's son, expanded the business and began manufacturing small iron ships. The official founding year of the shipyard is 1922. The construction of a number of coasters for surrounding skippers from the Altes Land allowed the company to grow to a size of 40 men by the Second World War . During the war they worked on behalf of the Navy.

In the post-war period, the shipyard continued to build coasters. The production on the new building was soon converted to section construction and the size of the ship grew compared to the pre-war standard. In 1951 the company passed into the hands of the next generation. The son Herbert Rancke bought neighboring properties and increased the operating area to 7800 m 2 . The shipyard had two slipways , one for ship repairs and one for new construction. About three coasters between 300 and 500 GRT per year were built on it. By the end of the 1950s, the workforce had grown to around 100. Around half of the employees lived in the company's own apartments.

Although Rancke planned to modernize and rationalize the shipyard at the end of the 1960s in order to obtain better new building conditions, the actual focus of the shipyard was always on the repair business. In the last full year of operation alone, 44 ships were repaired. Due to a lack of new construction orders, however, the shipyard ran into financial difficulties, whereupon the neighboring Sietas shipyard took over the operation on July 1, 1968 with assets and liabilities. The shipyard continued to exist for the next few years and made contract orders for Sietas. On November 24, 1975, H. Rancke went out as an independent company.

Ships

Rancke's counting of the building numbers began at 155 and until the Jolita , the last newbuilding delivered in July 1968 with the number 213, coasters were almost exclusively built. The initially manufactured fishing trawlers and two fresh water tankers built in 1964 for the German Navy remained exceptions.
