HAFRO

Hafrannsóknastofnun Íslands (HAFRO) is Iceland's national marine research institute .

In 1937, the University of Iceland's Marine Science Institute was established. Today's institute was founded in 1965 as a scientific institution of the Ministry of Fisheries. The institute operates the research vessels Bjarni Sæmundsson (55 m) and Árni Friðriksson (70 m). The ships are equipped with various interception systems and laboratories.

The institute puts u. a. the fishing quotas for Iceland. It also recommends the Ministry's annual quota for catching minke whales and fin whales off Iceland.
