HD² (high-def-direct encoding) is an encoding method for DVDs .

It is a process that is said to offer a higher quality compared to the usual DVD production process. For this purpose, the 1080i format is used as long as possible . In the end, of course, it has to be downscaled to PAL resolution despite everything . Usually the source material is already available in PAL format on DigiBeta, for example . However, HD material is processed for HD² and only the encoding of MPEG2 scaled -Stream for the DVD.
