The HD-ROM (High Density ROM) is a further development of the CD-ROM from Norsam Technologies and IBM . With the help of an ion beam only 50 nanometers in size, it was possible in early 1998 to produce a new CD-ROM with a storage capacity of around 165 gigabytes . The HD-ROM can store 250 times as much as a CD-ROM and 30 times as much as a DVD. The medium was developed for the storage of large databases and should score points over traditional archiving media such as tape drives with better access times and longer durability. The system was unable to establish itself on the market.
