The Soviet ChAI-6 ( Russian ХАИ-6 ) was based on the ChAI-1 and was constructed in the Kharkiv Aviation Institute . It was a two-seater military reconnaissance aircraft in low-wing design .

development

The high flight performance of the ChAI-1 led to demands from the military to develop a special type designed for high speed for aerial reconnaissance parallel to the Neman R-10 from civil aircraft. Compared to the original model, the machine has been reduced in size. A special remote-controlled camera tower was developed which made it possible to deliver images in corrected perspective up to 50 km away from the flight path. The fuel tanks and the actuators in the wing have been improved. The first flight took place in December 1935.

Although the machine showed excellent flight performance, it was ultimately found that an unarmed reconnaissance aircraft was too easy to intercept. A production was therefore not initiated. The camera tower could, however, be used in the Neman R-10, as were the new tanks and the changes to the wing.

construction

The machine was largely made of wood and had a retractable chassis. The oars and flaps were made of aluminum covered with fabric. Construction manager was Iossif Neman .
