The ChAI-20 ( Russian ХАИ-20 ) is a single-engine, single-seat sport aircraft that was developed, manufactured and flown by a group of students at the Kharkiv Aviation Institute from 1963 to 1966 under the direction of W. W. Reshetnikov and W. P. Lyuzhnin .

development

It was based on the non-executed ChAI-18 and was equipped with a commercially available aircraft engine after the failure of the ChAI-19 . The Kharkiv Aircraft Plant supported the institute with the construction work.

The machine took off on its maiden flight on June 25, 1967 . In the following test program, a speed range of up to 180 km / h and flight altitudes of up to 2000 m were found to be good. Simple aerobatic maneuvers could also be performed. A total of 15 flights were carried out.

construction

The low-wing aircraft made of wood, metal and plastic had a non-retractable nose wheel landing gear and a closed cockpit with a removable hood. The wing had electrically operated slotted flaps. The engine drove an adjustable two-blade pusher propeller made of metal.
