The ChAI-17 ( Russian ХАИ-17 ) is a single-engine, single-seat sport aircraft that was developed, manufactured and flown by a group of students at the Kharkiv Aviation Institute from 1957 under the direction of W. W. Reshetnikov .
development
The project was overseen by L. D. Arson. The assembly was done with the help of the Antonov design office in order to ensure the technical safety of the machine. On April 29, 1959, the machine took off on its first flight with W. W. Reshetnikov , during which the calculated data was confirmed. The second flight ended in an accident. The machine was largely destroyed, but served as the basis for the ChAI-19 .
A planned two-seater variant with double steering, 500 kg takeoff weight, more powerful engine and partly made of metal, which was not implemented, was called ChAI-18.
construction
The wooden low-wing aircraft had a non-retractable nose wheel landing gear. The engine drove an adjustable pusher propeller.
