The ChAI-1 ( Russian ХАИ-1 ) was a Soviet airliner used in the 1930s .

development

Designed and built it in 1932, led by Iosif Grigoryevich Neman by a group of students in the Aviation Institute Kharkov (Chai = Charkowski Awiazionny Institute / харковский авиационный институт ). A parallel development by a second group of students was the ChAI-2 , which managed a little more conventionally without a retractable landing gear, but was ultimately not manufactured.

The construction consisted entirely of wood in a low- wing design with a retractable landing gear. It was the first model of its kind in Europe to have a retractable landing gear. The prototype flew for the first time on October 8, 1932. Series production began in 1934 and ended in 1937 after 43 units had been built.

The ChAI-1 was the first Soviet aircraft whose normal production version was faster than 300 km / h. It was used until the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, among other things on the route Moscow - Simferopol .

A military version also built in series was derived under the designation R-10 .
