Beyer (family name)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Beyer [ ˈbai̯ɐ ] is a German family name .

Origin and meaning

The most widespread explanation for the name Beyer in all its variants (including Bayer, Beier, Bojer) is the reference to the Bavarian tribe or the Bavarian tribe, i.e. the one originating from Bavaria. However, it is not the only one; in individual cases other interpretations are also possible. Beyer can be of Silesian origin and a variant of the job title Bauer . Another explanation lies in the origin of the word beiern , which means striking bells with a clapper. In Pomerania it was the bell ringer who owned this name. The Beiermeester in Holland is a carillon master and thus a musician (see also beiern ). In the context of research on family names, it is also known that Bayer or Beyer also had a meaning as a Jewish name in the naming process around 1800.
