Life

The son of the Arnstadt Black Burgi's bailiff born Wilhelm Ernst Beyer boy graduated from the school in his home town and took in 1787 at the University of Jena , the law school on. A professional career as a lawyer began in the rural community of Lauchröden near Eisenach, where he appeared from 1793 as a Princely Saxon court advocate and court director. At the age of 32, he married Auguste Charlotte Christiane Appelius (February 22, 1772 - 1847), who came from a well-respected and wealthy family in Eisenach and was a great-aunt of Julius Appelius , who would later be President of the State Parliament .

With the marriage he moved to the city of Eisenach, where he served as councilor and treasurer of the city from 1798 . Beyer was appointed to the council in 1804. When the new city regulations in Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach were introduced in 1813 , Beyer was the first Eisenach mayor to rule according to these new legal principles. During his tenure, the Eisenach part of the country was administered as a secondary residence by a chancellor and government authorities.

Beyer achieved special services during the so-called French era - from 1806 to 1813 the city was formally subordinate to a French city commander who exercised military and police powers, while civil affairs were the responsibility of the city council and the ducal officials. This phase, which was perceived as foreign rule despite the alliance agreement, was characterized by marching through the troops and the tax burden, later also epidemics and food shortages. Beyer showed solidarity with the residents when the end of Napoleonic rule with the Battle of Leipzig seemed within reach. He asked for donations from the citizenry in order to equip as many war volunteers as possible. For his services during the occupation he was appointed councilor in 1822 .

Beyer died in Eisenach on February 14, 1832. His gravestone on the site of the old cemetery near the Kreuzkirche has been preserved.
