Hans Schmieder

Hans Schmieder (born May 30, 1866 in Grünberg (Silesia) ; † November 11, 1932 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German local politician and from 1904 mayor, from 1905 to 1919 mayor of the city of Eisenach in Thuringia .

Life

The son of a judicial councilor attended high schools in Bunzlau / Posen and Breslau . He then completed a legal training in Berlin and Heidelberg . In 1888 he became a trainee lawyer and four years later an assessor. In 1892 he took up a position as a legal assistant with the Wroclaw City Council. From 1893 to 1899 he worked as a magistrate's assessor in Berlin before he became second mayor in Bromberg in the same year .

On April 9, 1904, Schmieder was appointed mayor of Eisenach as the successor to August Nikolaus Müller , and from 1905 he held the office of mayor. The beginning of his term of office was marked by strong economic growth, especially in the field of industry and tourism. In order to further establish Eisenach as a spa town, the town acquired the Wilhelmsglücksbrunn saltworks near Creuzburg with strong commitment from Schmieders . The Kurbad Eisenach GmbH , which was founded with the participation of the city, obtained the rights of use for the mineral water spring, which was designated as the Karolinenquelle there , in order to open the spa in the Eisenacher Südstadt on July 8, 1906 with the water that was transported to Eisenach via a water pipe . Schmieder's early term in office saw the opening of important hotels ("Rautenkranz", "Karthäuser Hof", "Marienhöhe", "Thüringer Hof"), the major expansion of the Eisenach tram network and the opening of the Eisenach zoo below the Bismarck tower .

A turning point in Schmieder's tenure was the beginning of the First World War , which put an abrupt end to the economic boom and the city's spa operations.
