August Nikolaus Müller (born February 12, 1856 in Dortmund , † April 10, 1926 in Kassel ) was a German administrative lawyer and local politician. In the course of his career he was Lord Mayor of the cities of Eisenach and Kassel.

Life

Müller attended grammar school in Dortmund from 1865 to 1870 and the Lyceum in Hanover from 1870 to 1874 . He then studied until 1877 Law at the Ruprecht-Karls-University of Heidelberg , the Georg-August-University of Goettingen and the Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Berlin . In 1874 he became a member of the Corps Vandalia Heidelberg . After the first state examination , he completed his legal clerkship in Marburg and Uelzen from 1878 to 1880 . Müller worked as a lawyer in Weimar from 1880 and in the administrative service of the Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach from 1884 . Here he was in 1887 the district commissioner , later the district council in Eisenach .

On June 1, 1893, Müller was appointed Lord Mayor of Eisenach after his predecessor Georg von Eucken-Addenhausen was promoted to director of the Eisenach administrative district. Müller's term of office had a lasting impact on Eisenach in economic, social and cultural terms. During his term of office, the foundation stone was laid for the Eisenacher Südviertel (1894), the founding of the Eisenach vehicle factory (1896), the establishment of hotels and spa facilities, the opening of the Eisenach tram (1897), the Siebenborn gas station , and the Reuter Wagner Museum , the Sophienbad and much more. In 1897 the tradition of the Eisenach summer win was revived with his participation with a pageant and the establishment of a folk festival . On May 1, 1900, Müller introduced a "foreign tax" in Eisenach. Strangers who stayed in Eisenach for more than five days between May 1st and October 1st had to pay 2 marks per person and 4 marks per family. The ordinance was repealed in 1925 and a visitor's tax was introduced in 1928 .

On July 2, 1900, August Müller took over the office of Lord Mayor of Kassel; his successor in Eisenach was from November 15, 1900 Georg von Fewson .

In Kassel too, Müller managed to sustainably develop and change the city. He succeeded in incorporating the suburbs Wahlershausen , Kirchditmold , Rothenditmold and Bettenhausen , so that the city gained 18,000 inhabitants in 1906. Under his leadership, Kassel grew from 103,000 to 153,000 inhabitants by 1910. Numerous large public buildings were also inaugurated in Kassel during Müller's tenure, such as the office building of the State Insurance Institute Hessen-Nassau (1904), the office building of the Kassel Oberpostdirektion and the police headquarters in Königstor (both 1907), the new building for the art academy on the Aue, the court theater on Friedrichsplatz and the new Kassel town hall (all 1909).

For health reasons, Müller did not run for re-election in 1912; in July 1912 his regular term ended. Müller spent his old age in Kassel. He died exactly 26 years after his election as Lord Mayor of Kassel on April 10, 1926. As Lord Mayor, he was a member of the Prussian mansion from 1900 to 1912 .

Müller was married to Elisabeth geb. Sparrowhawk and had two children.
