Gerhard Schneider (born February 18, 1950 in Schmalkalden ) is a German CDU local politician . From 2000 to 2006 he was Lord Mayor of the city of Eisenach in Thuringia .

life and career

Schneider graduated from the Polytechnic High School in Schmalkalden and then completed a vocational training course with a high school diploma as a bricklayer. After completing basic military service with the NVA , he studied at the University of Architecture and Construction in Weimar . From 1974 to 1977 he was site manager at the road and civil engineering combine in Suhl , then senior site manager in Waltershausen .

From March 1990 on, Gerhard Schneider worked as the city planning director in Eisenach, but after only one year in 1991 he switched to a construction company as branch manager. In 1992 he became a specialist in the construction sector at the Eisenach city administration. On October 1, 1994 he was elected mayor (deputy mayor) and building department in Eisenach.

Since the incumbent Hans-Peter Brodhun no longer ran in the local elections in 2000 , Schneider ran for the CDU for the office of Lord Mayor of Eisenach. He won the election with 56.06 percent of the votes cast. Numerous construction projects were carried out in the city during Schneider's tenure. He lost the local elections in 2006 in the runoff against Matthias Doht ( SPD ).

After his time as Lord Mayor, he worked as managing director of the Thuringian Family Sense Foundation and later as head of the district office of the Federal Association of Medium-Sized Enterprises . Schneider is Vice President of the Thuringia Regional Association and President of the Eisenach District Association of the DRK and was chairman of the CDU parliamentary group of the Eisenach city council from 2012 to May 2014. In the 2014 local elections , he did not run again for a seat on the city council.

Gerhard Schneider is married for the second time; he has three children and is of Protestant denomination. From 1979 to 1982 he was a member of the parish council in his then home town.
