Renate Pirling

Renate Pirling (born August 24, 1929 in Nürtingen ) is a German prehistory and early historian .

Life

Renate Pirling's father was the Nürtingen architect Alfred Pirling. She first studied German language and literature and art history at the University of Tübingen , before moving on to prehistory and early history and in 1954, receiving her doctorate from the University of Munich with a thesis entitled The Middle Bronze Age in Württemberg .

In 1955 she worked for the first time at the Museum Burg Linn in Krefeld , whose director she was from 1961 until her retirement in 1994. Since 1959 she carried out excavations in the Roman-Franconian burial ground of Gelduba in Krefeld-Gellep . Here she uncovered around 6,000 graves from the period between the 1st and 8th centuries. The most important of these is the Frankish princely grave of Arpvar von Krefeld-Gellep , which was uncovered in 1962 . In 1995 she was awarded the title of professor for her scientific merits.
