Carl Wilhelm Julius Appelius (born September 20, 1826 in Eisenach , † October 19, 1900 in Eisenach) was a German lawyer , secret judge as well as president of the Saxon regional court and president of the state parliament in the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach. He held the office of president of the regional synod on a voluntary basis .

Life

Appelius was born in 1826 as the son of the future court director and ducal court attorney Carl Julius Emil Appelius and his wife Carolina, née. Röhlig, born in Eisenach. He attended grammar school in Eisenach and then studied law at the universities in Jena and Heidelberg .

Appelius worked for fifty years in the legal service of the Principality of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen and the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach. He initially worked as a district court assessor and counselor in Arnstadt and was then head of high courts for 33 years as district court director in Weida and Eisenach and here also president of the regional court. He volunteered in the regional synod of the Evangelical Church, of which he was the first president. He continued this office until his death.

For over 25 years he was a member of the state parliament , vice-president of the state parliament and, most recently, president of the state parliament in the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach. He was elected to the state parliament by the so-called "thousand thalers". According to the state election law passed in 1852 for the Grand Duchy, five members of parliament were elected by those "state entities who receive an annual income of at least one thousand thaler from sources other than property".

In 1855 Appelius married the granddaughter of the philosopher Christian Schreiber , Louise Reinhard, who was later entrusted as a lady-in-waiting at the Wartburg with the social and charitable tasks of the Grand Duchy. From this marriage three sons were born, including Alfred Appelius , who later became President of the State Parliament . Julius Appelius was very close friends with the publisher Hermann Böhlau , who also sponsored the firstborn of the Appelius couple. There were also very close contacts between Böhlau's daughter, the writer Helene Böhlau , and the Appelius family.
