Americanist Phonetic Alphabet
The Americanist Phonetic Alphabet (APA, English Americanist Phonetic Alphabet , also North American Phonetic Alphabet or Americanist phonetic notation ) is an extension of the Latin alphabet for the phonetic transcription of spoken languages, which goes back to John Wesley Powell . Unlike the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), it makes greater use of diacritical marks . It is used not only, but primarily, to describe indigenous North American languages .
