"Ronnie, the Bren Gun Girl" on a break from work with a mounted Brengun

Veronica Foster (1922-2000) was a Canadian armaments worker who was known as Ronnie, the Bren Gun Girl in a 1941 Canadian press photo and as a poster motif. The image became a cultural icon, symbolizing thousands of Canadian women who worked in the defense industry during World War II .

Emergence

Foster worked for the John Inglis and Company and manufactured Bren light machine guns . The company was located on Strachan Avenue in Toronto , Ontario . Foster's picture shows her taking a break from work after assembling a Brengun and became famous across Canada. The motif is believed to be the Canadian predecessor of Rosie the Riveter , a fictional person who became famous in American war propaganda. The depiction of Foster became popular because of various posters which, in addition to assembly work, also immortalized scenes from leisure time such as dancing and dinner parties.
