Harald Beyer (literary historian)

Harald Beyer (born November 15, 1891 in Bergen ; † July 26, 1960 there ) was a Norwegian literary historian , professor in Bergen and editor of Norsk litteraturhistorie , a six-volume standard work on Norwegian literary history.

Life

Beyer was the son of the bookseller Freydar Dekke Høegh von Krogh Beyer (1864-1933) and his German wife Flora Charlotte Müller (1862-1912). He attended the Bergen Cathedral School and studied language history in Kristiania . In 1924 he earned a doctorate with a thesis on Søren Kierkegaard and then became a high school teacher in Haugesund and Bergen. At the same time he wrote literary reviews for the newspaper Bergens Tidende and spoke literary programs for the Norwegian radio . In 1930/31 he worked as a university lecturer in Hamburg for a year .

In 1951 Beyer was appointed professor of European literature at the University of Bergen , which had been founded a few years earlier . He was also a member of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences , chairman of the theater Den Nationale Scene and a member of the Norwegian Language Council .

Beyer had been married to Eidis Johannessen since 1919 . His son Edvard was also an eminent literary historian.
