Den Nationale Scene - National Theater Bergen

Den Nationale Scene (translation: The National Stage ) is the oldest Norwegian theater with a permanent location in Bergen . In front of the building are statues by playwrights Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson , Henrik Ibsen and Nordahl Grieg .

The founding of the stage goes back to the Norwegian Theater ( Det Norske Theater ) operated by the composer and violinist Ole Bull since 1850 , which had to close in 1863 after intensive use due to economic problems. During this time, Bull had hired the then little-known Henrik Ibsen for almost six years (1851–1857) as set designer , director and in-house author. In his place came Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, who was artistic director of the theater between 1857 and 1859.

In 1876 the Den Nationale Scene foundation was established and gaming operations in the old building were resumed. A specially appointed committee decided in 1895 to build a new theater, but King Håkon VII did not lay the foundation stone until June 25, 1906. The building, designed in Art Nouveau style by architect Einar Oscar Schou , was opened on February 19, 1909 with a performance of the comedy Erasmus Montanus officially opened by Ludvig Holberg .

The house was seriously damaged by a grenade impact in 1940, but after various renovations it is still in use today. It has been a listed building since 1993 .

Also in 1993, the stage was granted national theater status. It is financed mainly through public funds and received in 2006 - with card income of 13.3 million Norwegian kroner  - a state grant of 78.2 million kroner. The house has 150 employees, including 40 actors. The Store Scenen (large stage) is the largest among the venues with 450 seats. The theater produces over 550 performances annually in the areas of spoken theater, musical and children's theater.
