Thomas Beyer (politician, 1960)

Thomas Beyer (born April 14, 1960 in Rostock ) is a German politician ( SPD ) and mayor of the Hanseatic city of Wismar .

Life

Beyer grew up in a Christian family home. He attended school in Rostock until 1976. Because of his Christian attitude and his decision to do army service as a construction soldier without a weapon, he was denied the direct route to high school and university. Thomas Beyer completed his training as a nurse. He worked at the University Clinic in Rostock for three years and then studied theology after passing a special school leaving examination.

During the fall of the Berlin Wall , Thomas Beyer became a member of the New Forum . He organized the first major events of the New Forum in October 1989 in Wismar and was the main speaker on October 31, 1989 in the Nikolaikirche .

In 1990 he was elected to the citizenship of Wismar; the citizenship elected him Senator for Social Affairs and Health and 1st Deputy Mayor. Elections in 1994, 2001 and 2009 confirmed him in this office.

In 1992 Thomas Beyer joined the SPD. Since 1997 he has been deputy chairman and since 1999 chairman of the SPD district association in Wismar. He is a member of an inquiry commission of the state parliament, which deals with the city-surrounding area in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

On April 25, 2010, Beyer was elected mayor of the Hanseatic city of Wismar. In the mayoral election on April 15, 2018, he was confirmed with 56.3 percent of the valid votes for a further term of eight years in his office.

In 2016 Beyer received the Karl Preusker Medal for his services to the libraries in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. He works on a voluntary basis as a member of the board of the community foundation, as chairman of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania regional association of the German library association and as chairman of the district association of war graves care in Wismar and is a member of the executive committee of TSG Wismar .

Beyer is a second marriage and has three children.
