Paul Emil Beyer

Paul Emil Beyer (born January 18, 1901 in Dresden , † September 14, 1982 in Leipzig ) was a German author and journalist.

Life

He was the son of an elementary school teacher from Dresden and lost his father at an early age. The city's sponsorship of talented students enabled him to attend the König-Georg-Gymnasium in Dresden, where he met Erich Kästner , with whom he had a long friendship. Paul Beyer then studied philosophy, philology, history, German and art history at the Universities of Marburg, Munich, Berlin and Leipzig.

In 1925 he successfully defended his doctorate with the title The Means of Characteristics in Gottfried Keller's "Green Heinrich" with the Leipzig literature professor Georg Witkowski . From then on Paul Beyer continued to deal intensively with the life and work of Gottfried Keller . In 1960 he presented a comprehensive biography about him entitled Gottfried Keller. His life in pictures . This biography was printed in several editions in the VEB Verlag Enzyklopädie in Leipzig.

From 1925 Paul Beyer worked for several newspapers in Leipzig, initially as a trainee for the Neue Leipziger Zeitung and later as an editor. After various intermediate stops, he took over the management of the culture and entertainment section of the Leipziger Neuesten Nachrichten in 1931 .

After the Second World War, Paul Beyer became editor of the Leipziger Volkszeitung in 1948 and from 1953 editor of Brockhaus Verlag in Leipzig. He was one of those authors and journalists who rebuilt the book city of Leipzig after the end of the war. At Brockhaus Verlag he was mainly responsible for the travel literature area and as such was the editor of the Brockhaus world calendar. In 1965, at the age of 64, he left Brockhaus Verlag as chief editor and died at the age of 81 on September 14, 1982 in Leipzig.

Paul Beyer's estate is now administered in the Saxon State Archives - Leipzig State Archives . It contains archive material from the period 1911 to 1981.
