Ernst Beyer

Ernst Beyer (born September 24, 1855 in Vielau ; † September 15, 1927 in Leipzig ) was a German teacher and school councilor and was considered a pioneer for popular education , schools and the teaching profession.

Life

Ernst Beyer was born the son of a miner in poor circumstances in Vielau. He was a teacher at the elementary school and later a school councilor in a district of Leipzig. He was a consistent advocate of popular education and an opponent of any drill . In the Saxon teachers' association, he campaigned for an adequate salary for his colleagues and for a general freedom from school fees . In 1893 he founded the Leipzig teachers' newspaper.

Beyer was an honorary member of the Wilkau district teachers' association . A plaque of honor was attached to the house where he was born in Vielauer Ernst-Thälmann-Strasse 43 as early as 1930. The former teachers' association in Leipzig bears his name. In Reindorfer district Vielau one is elementary school named after him.
