Live and act

Moritz Beyer, son of a farmer, acquired extensive agricultural knowledge through self-study , attending lectures at the University of Leipzig and at agricultural academies, on extended trips and through activities as an estate inspector . As a private scholar, he taught at several agricultural schools. In the summer semester of 1839 he was appointed professor of agricultural studies (successor to agricultural chemist Carl Sprengel ) at the Collegium Carolinum in Braunschweig . However, he only stayed there a year.

From 1839 to 1851 Beyer was the publisher and first editor of the Allgemeine Zeitung for German agriculture and forestry that he founded and existed until 1860 . He also published numerous original specialist books from all areas of agriculture. Noteworthy for the scientific history of agriculture is the book he published in 1847, The salvation of agriculture through chemistry and the patent fertilizer economy . It conveys an impressive picture of the mood among farmers at the time, still widespread suspicion of the effectiveness of mineral fertilizers.
