Jean Beyer

Jean Beyer (born April 26, 1914 in Ghent ; † February 22, 2002 in Drongen ) was a Belgian Catholic priest , Jesuit and internationally known canon lawyer .

Professional background

In 1932 Beyer entered the Jesuit order . He studied philosophy and theology in Gent, Eeghenoven and Leuven . In 1938 Beyer obtained a philosophical and in 1949 a theological licentiate . He was ordained a priest in 1944. He studied canon law from 1944 to 1947 at the Pontifical Gregorian University (PUG) in Rome , where he obtained another licentiate and began work on his doctoral thesis. Beyer taught moral theology in Leuven until 1959 and then canon law in Heverlee . In 1961 Beyer was able to obtain a doctorate in law. can. to lock. Immediately afterwards, he began teaching at the PUG, where he initially worked as an associate professor and until his retirement in 1984 as a full professor of canon law. In addition to his work as a professor, Beyer worked as an advisor to various dicasteries of the Roman Curia . He advised the Pontifical Commission for the Reform of the CIC from 1969 and, after its dissolution, from 1984 to 1996 the Pontifical Council for the Interpretation of Legal Texts . Through his publications in the field of canon and religious law, Beyer has significantly shaped the interpretation of the relevant legal matter.
