Hugo Schwendenwein

Hugo Schwendenwein (born November 5, 1926 in Klagenfurt ; † April 1, 2019 ) was an Austrian Roman Catholic priest and canon lawyer . He was considered one of the most important legal scholars in Austria.

Life

Hugo Schwendenwein studied Catholic theology , law and canon law . In 1954 he was ordained a priest . He received his doctorate in law (Dr. jur.) From the University of Vienna and a doctorate in both rights (Dr. iur. Can.) At the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome . In 1970 he completed his habilitation with the thesis “Priestly Education in the Upheaval of Canon Law”.

In 1973 he was appointed university professor for canon law at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz . He was the head of the Institute for Canon Law. He was an academic senator from 1973 to 1976 and dean of the Catholic Theological Faculty from 1976 to 1979. In 1995 he retired .

The main research area was canon law, ecclesiastical legal history and Austrian state church law . Schwendenwein was the only theologian to be a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences , from 1985 a corresponding and from 1995 a real member of the philosophical-historical class. He was a member of the Consociatio internationalis studio iuris Canonici doctorate , the Austrian Society for Canon Law and the German Association of Legal Historians.

Hugo Schwendenwein was a member of the Catholic student association KÖStV Traungau Graz in the Austrian Cartell Association .
