The Kosovo Intelligence Agency ( alb : Agjencia Kosovar e Inteligjencës;. Engl . Kosovo Intelligence Agency (KIA) ) was founded on 4 February 2009 by the Kosovar government and headquartered in Pristina , Kosovo .

The establishment of the Kosovo intelligence service has been postponed since 2008 because the coalition partners of the Kosovar government could not agree on who will be the director of the KIA. On February 4, 2009, the Kosovar President Fatmir Sejdiu and the Prime Minister Hashim Thaçi presented the new and first director of the Kosovar intelligence service, Bashkim Smakaj .

The Kosovo Intelligence Service is a civilian intelligence service. Its declared tasks include a .: Obtaining information, counter-espionage , combating terrorism and combating drug trafficking and organized crime .

management

Bashkim Smakaj was the first head of the Kosovar intelligence service. The head is elected to office for five years with the possibility of re-election, but no more than one re-election. Smakaj resigned on January 16, 2015 after scandals in the intelligence service. This was followed by Agron Selima in this post. However, Selima also resigned in 2017, surprisingly and without giving reasons. He was succeeded by Driton Gashi . Gashi, in turn, had to resign together with Interior Minister Flamur Sefaj in April 2018 after six Turks were expelled from the country in an urgent procedure without informing the Prime Minister . He was succeeded on April 20, 2018 by Shpend Maxhuni .
