Bashkim Smakaj

Bashkim Smakaj (* 1976 near Klina ) is a Kosovar civil servant.

Life

Smakaj studied biology and political science at the University of Pristina . He joined the Kosovar police , where he was responsible for strategic planning and was the liaison officer between the police and the border police. In 2009 he was appointed the first director of the Kosovo Intelligence Service .

Smakaj resigned from his position as Director of the Intelligence Service in January 2015. Several scandals in the secret service preceded his resignation. An intelligence agent was discovered and killed in Syria while looking for Albanian jihadists . However, Smakaj did not inform Parliament about this incident. In addition, a Serbian citizen was arrested as part of a secret service operation when he was transporting explosives to Pristina . The secret service was not allowed to carry out police measures, but should have passed the case on to the public prosecutor. Smakaj and two other senior officials were involved in the case.
